If you haven’t heard of the dynamic guitarists that make up the Mexican group Rodrigo y Gabriela then you should definitely get in the know. The two incredibly talented musicians met while playing for a thrash metal band in Mexico City. Being that they were very ambitious and equally as gifted they moved to Europe to seek a scene that was more open to the idea of travelling musicians. It landed them in an unlikely spot for Latin American guitar virtuosos — Dublin, Ireland. It was in Dublin that the two began playing famous pubs and busking on the streets, making a name for themselves as players known to possess both sophistocated finesse and intense technical skill.
They have recently (Jan. 24) released their 5th studio album, entitled, Area 52. The album has it all. High and lows, fury and finesse, dramas and joys. The duo perform the album with a host of Cuban musicians giving them a more full, and lush sound than heard on their previous albums. I personally recommend the tracks Ixtapa, Tamacun, 11:11 and Santo Domingo. I hope you all enjoy the album as much as I did. I’ve grown to appreciate all of their music very much, even though it isn’t particularly the style of music I typically prefer.
